DHS graduation now set for June 26

Class of 2020 commencement ceremonies tentatively have been scheduled for Friday, June 26.

After conferring with local law enforcement and local physicians, the Demopolis City Board of Education decided to delay the class of 2020 commencement ceremonies based on professional opinions and COVID-19 cases in Demopolis and the surrounding area.

Supt. Kyle Kallhoff said the board feels this decision is the most responsible one to ensure the safety of the graduates, faculty and guests. The BOE will evaluate local COVID-19 cases, State Health orders and consult with local law enforcement and physicians in early June to determine if June 26th is a safe option for celebrating the class of 2020 with or without guests limitations. If it is determined that June 26th is not safe, then the back-up date will be Friday, July 31.

Graduates who are entering the military are asked to contact the school with an option to schedule a private ceremony prior to the date they are to report for service.

The BOE “appreciates the understanding of the graduates and families as we balance celebrating the class of 2020 with the safety of students, faculty, and guests,” said Kallhoff.
