DHS Baseball claims 2-1 win over Sipsey Valley

After three scoreless innings, the visiting Sipsey Valley Bears took a 1-0 lead over the Demopolis Tigers in the top of the fourth inning on Friday night. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Jones Colgrove singled then stole second. After the second out, Trey Malone hit one off the glove of the Bears’ first baseman and Colgrove scored to tie the game at 1-1.

2-28-20 — Demopolis, Ala. — Demopolis’ Jones Colgrove drives in the game winning run against Sipsey Valley.

In the bottom of the sixth, pitcher Hayes Atkins reached first and Jackson Cox came in as a courtesy runner for Atkins. Payton Geary’s sacrifice moved Cox to second. With a 3-1 count, Colgrove put a shot in the gap in right-center which allowed Cox to score the go-ahead run and eventual game winner. Colgrove ended up on third, with a triple.

2-28-20 — Demopolis, Ala. — Demopolis’ Hayes Atkins pitches against Sipsey Valley.

Colgrove came in in relief of Atkins in the top of the seventh and got three ground outs to end the game.

Colgrove went 2-for-3, scored one run and had one RBI. Jay Holley and Ryan Bumgarner collected the only other hits for the Tigers, with one each. Bumgarner and Colgrove each had one steal. Atkins tallied 14 strikeouts in six innings, while giving up three hits, two walks and one run.
