Demopolis track takes three medals at state meet

Ashleigh Ivory stands atop the podium. She added two more outdoor state championships over the weekend, bringing her indoor/outdoor prep career total to seven.

Demopolis Track and Field traveled to Gulf Shores this past weekend in hopes of bringing home a couple of state medallions. With Ashleigh Ivory leading the pack by grabbing two state championship medals, Demopolis managed to bring home three medals in total along with a few season best times and two new school records.

The weekend started out with the 4×100 relay semifinals with the two-time championship team comprised of Ivory, Nykeria Grayer, Kel Rainey, and Shay’shawna Smith placing second in prelims and advancing to the finals. This day also hosted the 100-meter semifinals with Darius Williams picking up seventh place to also advance to the finals. The afternoon continued on with the 4×400, including Gracie Boykin, Shacorie Cockrell, Shonedra Richardson and Kamryn Harris who ran a season best time of 4:21.25. Ashleigh Ivory concluded the successful day by jumping a personal best and becoming the 5A long jump champion.

On Friday, Kamryn Harris started off the day by getting a school record in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:01.55. The girls 4×800 team of Boykin, Cockrell, Richardson and Amindy Mullen managed to also get a season best with a time of 11:22:28. In the 100-meter hurdle race on Friday, Ivory picked up first place to advance to the finals on Saturday, where she would become the 5A 100-meter champion. Darius Williams placed fifth in the 100-meter finals, running a season best of 10.86.

The weekend closed out with one of the closest races in meet history. Though the 4×100 girls team is known for its first place medals in the past, it came up short by one 10th of a second to end this year’s season with second place.

Head coach Deborah Boykin noted that the track team had an exceptional season and are more than ready take on the next one.
