Demopolis thumps Greenville in area tourney

Demopolis (14-13-1) needed only three innings to beat Greenville 15-0 in its first game of area tournament play Monday.

Danielle Tatum struck out seven batters over three innings while surrendering one hit on an infield squib.

The Lady Tigers drew 10 walks, took advantage of four hit batters and 15 wild pitches to help abbreviate the contest.

Demopolis sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs in each of the first two innings while getting three runs from four batters in the third to end the game.

Sydney Colyar opened the scoring with a two-run inside-the-park homer that also plated Zarquashia Taylor, who served as Tatum’s courtesy runner.

Zoe Lewis, Courtney Lawrence, Jade Montgomery and Jessica Adams each scored on wild pitches in the opening inning.

The second inning saw Lewis hit a RBI single to plate Colyar for the 7-0 lead. Lawrence reached on a bunt single and later scored on a wild pitch. Adams and Montgomery also scored on wild pitches. Olivia Brame scored on a throwing error. The final run of the frame came when Colyar stroked a RBI single to plate Victoria Washburn.

Demopolis ended the game in the third when Lewis opened with a single and scored on a wild pitch, Riley King walked and scored on a wild pitch and Montgomery hit a RBI grounder to plate Lawrence.

Greenville opened the tournament with an 11-8 win over Selma. The loss to Demopolis sends Greenville to an elimination game against Selma. The winner of that contest will punch a ticket to the South Central Regional Tournament in Troy and to the area tournament finals against Demopolis.
