Demopolis takes two Saturday to complete perfect weekend

Demopolis made a clean sweep through its tournament, capping the 3-0 weekend Saturday with wins over Hale County and Clarke County.

The Tigers notched their first win of the season Friday night with a 5-3 come-from-behind effort over Leroy. Play resumed at 11 a.m. Saturday in a contest that saw the Tigers pester three Hale County pitchers en route to a 13-3 six-inning win.

Demopolis trailed 3-0 after one inning of play and carried that deficit into the bottom of the third when the Tiger bats came to life. DHS scored four runs in the third, two in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth to polish off the win.

Jay Craig highlighted the offensive effort, going 2-for-4 with a homer, a double, a run scored and two RBIs. Hunter Colyar finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Chandler Barton also doubled in the game, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

D.D. Davis was 2-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI. R.J. Cox went 1-for-3 with one RBI. Jacob Rodrigues was 1-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI. Jamarcus Ezell went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Ryan Morrison put together a 1-for-3 line with two runs scored. Jonathon Lewis stole a base in the game.

Colyar picked up the win on the mound, striking out seven over four innings of work while scattering four hits and three walks. Ezell followed with two shutout innings, striking out one, walking one and giving up one hit.

Demopolis followed with a 6-2 victory over Clarke County to close out tournament play. Spring Hill signee Luke Yelverton struck out six over four innings of work, scattering three hits and issuing no walks for the win. Lewis allowed one earned run over two innings of work and struck out two while Ezell pitched a perfect seventh and struck out two.

In the bottom of the fifth, Craig hit his second homer of the day when he stroked a three-run shot that plated Colyar and Tavion Broadwater to put the Tigers up 6-0.

Craig finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs. Colyar was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Davis went 2-for-4. Cox and Barton each finished at 1-for-3. Ezell finished 1-for-3 with a run scored. Morrison scored a run.

Demopolis (3-1) plays again Saturday when it travels to Grove Hill to face Clarke County.
