Demopolis splits pair in Corinth

The Demopolis High softball team dropped a rivalry game to Sweet Water Tuesday before hitting the road this weekend and going 1-1 in a tournament in Corinth, Miss.

SWEET WATER 3, DEMOPOLIS 2

The Lady Tigers struck first against Sweet Water when Taylor Smith reached on an error and scored on an Abby Grace Cameron single for the 1-0 lead. The Lady Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the inning when Charlie Vickers walked, moved up on an Elaina Mitchell sacrifice and scored on a BreAnna Ramsey sacrifice fly.

The game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the fourth when Curdajah Bonner scored on a Lindsey Davis single for the 2-1 Sweet Water lead. SWHS added another with two outs when Mallory Roe scored on a delayed steal of home.

Demopolis scratched out another run in the top of the fifth when Weezie Hughes hit a grounder to plate Samiya Lucas, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Smith hit a one-out double in the top of the seventh to put the tying run aboard but Demopolis could not drive her in.

Ashton Mooreer and Lizzie Cannon combined to strike out three batters over six inning of work while scattering five hits and allowing two earned runs.

Megan Roe got the win for Sweet Water, striking out eight over seven innings of work while scattering six hits and allowing one earned run.

DEMOPOLIS 6, PINE GROVE 0

The Lady Tigers grabbed an early lead against Pine Grove Saturday morning and scarcely looked back. After Moorer struck out the side in the top of the first, Smith dropped down a bunt single to open the home half of the frame. Hughes sacrificed her to third before Cameron singled to right to drive her home for the 1-0 lead. Cameron later scored on an error off the bat of Bria Brown for the 2-0 advantage.

Demopolis blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth when Elly Brown singled and scored on a Bria Brown triple. Alex Abrams then drove in Bria Brown with a fly ball to left. Abrams, who reached on an error, later scored on a steal of home before an error allowed Samiya Lucas to score for the 6-0 lead. Tiffany McInnis also hit a triple in the inning.

Moorer picked up the win, striking out five over four innings of work while allowing one hit. Tayler Pipkins finished off the game, allowing one hit in two-thirds of an inning.

CORINTH 1, DEMOPOLIS 0

Corinth scratched out one run in the bottom of the first against the Lady Tigers and made it stand out in pitcher’s duel Saturday afternoon. Cannon surrendered a leadoff triple but only gave up two more hits over the next six innings of work while striking out four in the effort.

McKenzie Patterson took the win for Corinth, striking out 10 over seven innings of work while allowing six hits and walking one.

Hughes did the bulk of the heavy lifting offensively, recording three hits in the game. Elly Brown, McInnis and Caroline Larkin had one hit apiece.

Demopolis (2-4) is set to open area play Monday at Bibb County before hosting Thomasville Tuesday. The Lady Tigers travel to Hale County Thursday and then head to the Tombigbee Classic in Leroy Friday and Saturday.
