Demopolis High golfers bow out in sub-state round

The Demopolis High School golf team saw its impressive season come to an end in the sub-state round at Lagoon Park in Montgomery Monday.

“While the boys team did represent Demopolis with a lot of class and a fine score, it came up a little short to advance to the state championship match,” Demopolis High golf coach Mike Black said.

Jordan Williams led the way for the Tigers with a 77, a score that appeared to have him poised to qualify for state as an individual before the final flight of golfers came in and beat him by only two strokes.

“Jordan shot a 77, which was low score for the Tigers and had a few chances to shoot even better but I am very proud of the way he played as well as Braden Spiller, Sam Yeager, Blake Bryant and Chandler Stuedeman,” Black said. “

These young men are all seniors and will be missed from the golf team next year. They leave with a regular season record of 101 wins and 4 losses in the last four seasons. They also have played in four sectionals and advanced the last three years to the sub state matches. They have also won several tournaments and have medalists in almost all regular season matches. I am pleased with their efforts and have been pleased to have been the golf coach for these fine young athletes. Braden Spiller has accepted a scholarship from Mississippi College to play golf and will continue his career. Jordan Williams will be attending Vanderbilt, Chandler Stuedeman will attend Auburn, Sam Yeager will attend Alabama, and I am working on a scholarship for golf at another Mississippi school for Blake Bryant. Again they gave the effort of champions but came up short.”

Anna Reid also competed in girls sub-state action, missing the line to advance by only three strokes.

“Anna will be back for two more years and has a great future in the sport,” Black said. “She plays against boys at most of the matches we have been in this year and has not lost to any boys or girls competition regular season matches. I believe Anna will become a state champion for DHS in the near future. She has also advanced from sectionals to sub state for the past two seasons.”
