Demopolis hangs 34 on Central in doubleheader, runs win streak to 13

Demopolis proved a less-than-considerate guest Friday night as it took both ends of a doubleheader from Class 5A, Area 7 foe Central-Tuscaloosa in merciless fashion.

Demopolis 16, Central 2

The Tigers took a little while getting the bats going in the first game of the series but strung together more than enough hits to capitalize on Central’s 12 errors for the 16-2 win.

Demopolis got on the board in the top of the third inning with a four-run rally. Tyler Jones walked ahead of a Dede Davis single to lead off the frame. Two batters later, Davis Petrey doubled both home for the 2-0 lead. Petrey and Charles Casper later scored on an error to push it to 4-0.

Three straight Falcon errors to open the top of the fourth paved the way for a 10-run frame for the Tigers. Central committed seven miscues in the inning to aid the Demopolis effort.

Henry Overmyer reached on one error and scored on another. Tyler Jones reached on an error and scored on a Petrey ground ball. Davis reached on an error and scored on another. Hunter Thrash singled home Petrey and Casper to push the lead to 9-0. Hudson Holley then doubled in Thrash for the 10-0 advantage. Jones singled in courtesy runner Wesley Allgood to push the lead to 11-0. Overmyer then scored on another error to stretch it to 12-0. Andrew Patterson tripled in Jones and Davis for the 14-0 lead.

Holley singled in Casper in the fifth before Thrash scored on Peyton Geary’s RBI grounder to cap the Demopolis scoring.

Central scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth without the benefit of a hit but could not plate enough to extend the game.

Holley (6-0) got the win, striking out four batters over four and two-thirds innings of work while walking three and allowing no hits. Patterson struck out the only batter he faced to cap off the combined no-hitter.

Demopolis 18, Central 1

Demopolis scored seven runs in the first two innings of game two and iced the nightcap with an 11-run fourth for an 18-1 victory.

With one out in the top of the first, Demopolis strung together five consecutive singles. Patterson and Russ Logan started the streak to load the bases. Petrey followed with a single to score Patterson for the 1-0 lead. Thrash singled in Logan on a play that also saw courtesy runner Maxwell George score on an error to make the Tiger lead 3-0. After Jake Malone walked to load the bases, Hayes Atkins drew a walk to force in Thrash for the 4-0 advantage.

Patterson doubled to open the second inning. Two batters later, Petrey singled him home. Thrash followed with a single to plate George. Thrash later scored on a passed ball to put Demopolis up 7-0.

Central scratched out a run in the bottom of the third to narrow the gap to 7-1. The Tigers quickly got that run back and 10 more just like it in the top of the fourth.

Petrey and Thrash singled to open the inning. Holley doubled home courtesy runner DeDe Davis for the 8-1 advantage. Thrash scored on a passed ball before Malone drove in Holley with a sacrifice fly.

Atkins and George later scored on an error for the 12-1 lead.  Logan singled in Patterson to push it to 13-1. Petrey tripled in Logan for the 14-1 lead. Thrash followed with a triple of his own to score Petrey and make it 15-1. Malone singled in Thrash and Holley before himself scoring on an error to set the final margin.

Petrey struck out six batters over three innings of work while allowing a hit and an unearned run for the win. The junior also finished with six RBIs in the doubleheader.

Demopolis (13-4, 5-0) travels to Thomasville Tuesday night.
