Demopolis goes 3-3 in Gulf Coast Classic

Demopolis went 3-3 over the course of three days during the spring break week Gulf Coast Classic III.

Pleasant Valley 6, Demopolis 2

The Lady Tigers got off to a slow start Monday in Orange Beach as they allowed a three-run first inning to Class 3A Pleasant Valley on the way to a 6-2 loss. Demopolis trailed 4-0 in the top of the third when Kendall Hannah doubled home Napoleon Roberson to narrow the deficit to 4-1. An error-aided fourth allowed Pleasant Valley to score a pair of runs and move the lead to 6-1. Kendall Hannah tripled in Abby Grace Cameron in the fifth for the final Lady Tiger run of the game.

Roberson singled in the game and Bria Brown doubled to account for the only two hits outside of Hannah’s run-producing base knocks.

Natalie Tatum struck out two over four innings of work while allowing six hits and three earned runs.

Demopolis 6, Southside-Gadsden 0

Demopolis fared much better in its second game of the day as it thrashed Southside-Gadsden 6-0 in five innings.

Hannah singled in Cameron in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 Demopolis lead. Elly Brown walked, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a Lane Braeden Burbage grounder to move the lead to 2-0 in the second. Courtesy runner Alex Abrams came on following a Natalie Tatum walk, later scoring on a passed ball for the 3-0 advantage. Hannah then drove in Burbage with a single for the 4-0 lead. Burbage singled in Abrams and Tiffany McInnis in the third to round out the scoring. Kayla Montz also singled in the game, accounting for the fourth Demopolis hit.

Tatum struck out five batters over five innings while allowing five hits and walking two for the shutout victory.

Demopolis 6, DeKalb County (Tenn.) 3

In an 8 a.m. tilt Tuesday, Demopolis watched DeKalb County High out of Smithville, Tenn. sound the alarm early. A walk, a double and a homer to open the game put the Lady Tigers squarely in a 3-0 hole before Tatum dug in and struck out the next three batters to end the inning.

Roberson singled to open the Demopolis half of the inning and moved up on a Bria Brown single. Montz then singled in Roberson to get Demopolis on the board.

Roberson singled with two outs in the second and later scored on an error to cut it to 3-2. Hannah then stepped in and placed a 1-1 pitch through the six hole to drive in Cameron and tie the game.

An error with two outs in the bottom of the third allowed Abrams to score to put Demopolis up 4-3. Cameron followed with a single to center to plate Taylor Smith and Roberson to set the final margin.

Tatum, who came on in relief, struck out five batters while allowing no hits over four innings of work.

Prattville 1, Demopolis 0

Tuesday’s second game found Demopolis locked in a pitchers’ duel with Class 7A Prattville. Tatum struck out eight batters over five and two-thirds inning while scattering five hits. Prattville worked around a Hannah double and singles from Abrams and Montz as well as two from Roberson in the game.

The Lady Lions took advantage of the international tiebreaker rule to get a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Demopolis 10, Southside-Gadsden 2

Demopolis scored five runs in the top of the first inning in its first game Wednesday to take firm control against Southside-Gadsden on its way to a 10-2 victory. Cameron singled with one out ahead of a Hannah walk to open the frame. Bria Brown singled in Cameron for the 1-0 lead. Montz followed with a single to load the bases. Elly Brown then singled home Hannah to make it 2-0. Tatum walked to plate Bria Brown for the 3-0 lead. Two batters later, Burbage singled in Montz and Elly Brown for the 5-0 advantage.

Bria Brown singled home Cameron in the second before Elly Brown hit a sacrifice fly to plate Hannah for the 7-0 lead. Tatum then singled in Emily Schroeder to push the lead to 8-0.

Roberson homered over the right field fence to open the third inning. After a pair of Southside runs in the bottom of the third, Elly Brown singled to open the fourth and later scored on a Roberson double.

Tatum picked up the win in the circle, striking out four over two and a third innings of work while allowing two hits and a walk.

Vestavia Hills 6, Demopolis 2

Demopolis saw its run end with a whimper in Wednesday’s second game. The Lady Tigers trailed 6-1 to Vestavia Hills after two innings of play on the way to a 6-2 loss.

Elly Brown walked to lead off the second and scored on an error for the first Demopolis run of the day. Burbage doubled in Abrams in the fourth to end the Demopolis scoring.

Demopolis (15-10) is set to host Greensboro Wednesday at 5 p.m.
