Demopolis girls golf qualifies for sub-state

Demopolis High School golf has at least one more round to play this season as the girls team heads to the Sub-State Golf Tournament in Troy Monday, May 8. The girls qualified for the draw with a strong showing at the AHSAA Sectional Tournament Monday in Mobile. The Tiger girls finished fourth in the tournament with a team score of 288.

“The girls were under a great deal of stress playing against UMS-Wright, Trinity, St. Paul’s and ACA Montgomery,” Demopolis golf coach Greg Rhyne said of his girls, who are averaging a nine-hole match average of 150 on the season. “The girls played the course to the best of their abilities, which is all I can ask of my players. The girls are excited about moving forward to the next tournament but understand that some improvements need to be made before then.”

The top round of the day for the Tiger ladies came from Caroline Webb, who shot an 83 to finish third out of 27 golfers at the tournament.

The ladies wrapped their regular season with a match record of 6-2. Caroline Webb averaged a 43 while Hannah Webb averaged 49 and Abby Quinney averaged 57.

The Demopolis boys finished the regular season at 10-3 and posted a nine-hole match average of 185. Luke Reid averaged 43 on the year while Jackson Lay shot a 46. Austin Hall and Bill Stephens each averaged 48 while Jay Bell averaged 53.

Reid represented the Demopolis boys as an individual in Mobile at the sectional tournament at the Azalea City Golf Course.

“Finally, to the parents of my players, it has been a wonderful season coaching your son/daughter, a big thank you for all you did to help make this a successful season,” Rhyne said.
