Demopolis finishes season with loss in regional tournament

Napoleon Roberson slides in for the first run of the game.

TROY – Miscues plagued Demopolis Friday in what proved to be its final game of the 2018 season. Three errors in the middle innings helped Jemison punctuate the Lady Tigers’ campaign with a 6-4 win.

Napoleon Roberson reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. A two-out Alex Abrams single in the second set up Roberson’s RBI single for the 2-0 advantage.

Kayla Montz fires a pitch in the first inning.

Kayla Montz recorded the first two outs of the third inning before a base hit and two errors allowed Jemison to score three runs and take the lead. Another error in the fourth helped set up a sacrifice fly that moved the Jemison lead to 4-2.

Demopolis rallied with two outs in the bottom of the fourth as Abrams reached on an error and later scored on Abby Grace Cameron’s single to right to narrow the gap to 4-3.

A double, a single and a passed ball in the top of the fifth allowed Jemison to move the advantage to 5-3 before Demopolis fought right back in the home half of the frame. Natalie Tatum singled and gave way to courtesy runner Aerial Irby, who scored on a Bria Brown double for what proved to be the final run of the season.

The Lady Tigers’ had their chances late but found their hopes frustrated each time. In the sixth, Abrams hit a leadoff single and appeared to be safely on second base after a Cameron bunt. The home plate umpire called Cameron out on offensive interference. After a lengthy delay in which the umpires conferred and upheld the call, the air proverbially seemed to be out of the Demopolis balloon.

Elly Brown snares a pop up.

Jemison tacked on a run in the seventh to move the advantage to 6-4. Tatum drew a walk to open the bottom of the seventh and Demopolis appeared poised to threaten before a caught stealing and a strikeout quickly alleviated any pressure on Jemison. Elly Brown drew a walk with two outs but the umpire rung up the following batter on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.

Demopolis ends its season at 29-16.
