Demopolis City Schools looks to hire social worker

At a called meeting Monday, the Demopolis Board of Education approved hiring a social worker for the school system.

The nine-month position requires applicants to be licensed by the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners, be a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and hold a degree from an accredited school of social work.

In addition, social worker and/or social work experience with children and adolescents will be considered.

The duties of the social worker are to:

  • Serve as a liaison between the school system and local agencies
  • Prepare and maintain a menu of services offered by community health and welfare agencies
  • Assist school personnel in communications with DHR in cases of neglect and child abuse
  • Work with identified students and families who are encountering social/emotional barriers that are inhibiting a quality education
  • Assist schools, school nurses and families in obtaining social and/or health services to help resolve family problems and improve learning opportunities for students
  • Provide support services, counseling and follow-up with targeted students
  • Instruct anger management classes two evenings per month
  • Instruct parenting classes two evenings per month and as needed during normal work hours
  • Conduct home visits, with school resource officers or school staff, as needed
  • Serve on the school system threat assessment/prevention team
  • Assist school-based counselors with individual and group crisis situations
  • Serve as a resource to employees who are experiencing individual and/or family crisis
  • Serve as a resource for truant students and families
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation for use by school administration and outside agencies
  • Understand FERPA requirements and student confidentiality
  • Train staff on related topics
  • All other duties as determined by the school superintendent.

The salary will be in line with a nine-month teacher scale according to degree and experience in social work.

Hiring is subject to Board approval after interviewing with the superintendent and school system leadership team. This job will require flexible hours and some evening hours.
