DCSS to partner with USDA, Baylor University for free student meals in June

Students in the Demopolis City School System are eligible for a new, free program for meals that will be delivered to their homes in June.

Called Meals-to-You, the program is a partnership with the DCSS, the U.S. Department of Agriculture. and Baylor University.

The free meals are available to all students who attended Westside Elementary School in 2019-2020 and households whose children were receiving free and reduced lunches during the year.

The school system “still wants to provide food and nutrition to our students even during this time while school is closed,” said Supt. Kyle Kallhoff.

Once students are enrolled in the program, every other week a Meals-to-You box for each child ages 1-18 will be delivered to the home. Each box will include 10 breakfasts and 10 lunches/suppers—enough food for each kid for two weeks!

All foods are shelf stable, which means they will not expire.

The boxes are packed for security, and because the food is shelf stable, no refrigeration is needed. “Receiving this benefit will not affect any other existing benefits,” said Kallhoff.

To sign up, parents must fill out an online form and submit it as soon as possible. Access the online form by clicking this link: https://mealstoyou.org/emergency-meals-to-you-application/.

Boxes will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, contact Aretha Littles at 334-289-1721.
