Commission grants tax abatement

Alabama Pellets, LLC, received a ten-year property tax abatement from the Marengo County Commission Tuesday. The abatement covers all but education taxes on an initial $90 million investment.

In thanking Alabama Pellets for opening the plant in Marengo County, Commissioner Jason Windham said members “appreciate your efforts.”

Roy Geiger, owner of Two Rivers Lumber Co. and who was instrumental in getting Alabama Pellets to the county, said the businesses in turn “appreciate the County Commission supporting us.”

The short meeting started with Michael Thompson handing over the gavel as chairman to long-time commissioner Freddie Armstead.

The Commission reappointed three members to the Marengo County Economic Development Authority: Justina Allgood from District 2; Mike Robertson, District 3, and Errol Agee, District 4.

In other business, the Commission:

  • Awarded the bid to publish the voters list to the Demopolis Times for $5,858;.87.
  • Approved Lorraine Harbin to be hired as a clerk in the Probate Office.
  • Announced the county will join in the Severe Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday Feb. 21-23.
