Circuit clerk warns of jury duty scam

Circuit Clerk Kenny Freeman issued a warning Wednesday to Marengo County citizens regarding a jury duty scam that has reached the state of Alabama.

“I would like to warn the people of Marengo County there is a jury scam going on in the state of Alabama,” Freeman said in a press release. “Someone will call and state they are from the sheriff’s office and are giving actual employee names. They will tell the person there is a warrant for their arrest for failure to appear for jury duty and a fine of up to $1,000 should be paid.”

Freeman said scammers then go on to explain to victims how they can pay the fine online.

Freeman said he welcomes questions regarding jury duty or the scam at his office at 334-295-2224. He also encouraged anyone contacted by such scammers to immediately contact local law enforcement.
