Census count continues at Papa’s Foods on Saturday

The push in Marengo County to win $65,000 for its schools continues Saturday, Sept. 5, when volunteers will set up at Papa’s Foods in Linden.

The county is competing against 31 other under-reporting counties in the state to rack up the greatest number of people completing the census. The Census Bowl continues through this month.

The U.S. Constitution states that every 10 years the residents of the country are to be counted. The results determine how many Representatives each state has in the House of Representatives and how federal monies are distributed. Alabama is in danger of losing a seat in the House unless more people respond to the census.

The counties invited to take part in the Census Bowl are those who lag behind in the census count. Alabama “stands to lose billions in funding, a seat in Congress and economic development opportunities,” said Gov. Kay Ivey.
