‘Can Good’ honored by Council proclamation

Accolades for Albert “Can Good” Thomas continued Thursday when Mayor Woody Collins signed the proclamation naming Friday, Oct. 29, as “Albert ‘Can Good’ Thomas Day” in Demopolis.

Albert Thomas smiles broadly after Mayor Woody Collins signs a proclamation in his honor.

In a ceremony before the Demopolis City Council meeting, Thomas was honored for having served as manager for the Demopolis High School football team for 46 years. The proclamation recognizes him for being “a long, loyal volunteer and a well-known figure in the City of Demopolis.”

The honoree already had been recognized by the Marengo County Commission and will have a field house at DHS named in his honor.

Council members passed four items:

  • Closing Main Avenue from Pettus Street to the railroad tracks during Trick-or-Treating Oct. 30.
  • ABC Alcohol License to Penny Bowden for restaurant retail liquor at the Foscue House.
  • Declaring as surplus the former Ford dealership at Cedar Avenue and Capitol Street and putting it out for bid.
  • Naming Major Walker to a second term on the Park and Rec Board. Council members were asked to present nomination at the next meeting to fill a second vacancy on the board.

City Project Manager Mike Baker said paving contractor S.T. Bunn has completed five more streets in Phase 2 of the city paving project. He is waiting on an engineering report on the nine problem areas that have been discovered that must be repaired.

The mayor thanked Councilman David McCants for pointing out the issue of Vowell’s Family Market shopping carts being left all over town. He said the problem is being resolved.
