Bulldogs sink Pirates, 41-20

The Sweet Water Bulldogs’ game against the Fruitdale Pirates was postponed due to rain. The delay didn’t help the Pirates, as the visiting Bulldogs overcame the soggy sod and the Pirates to stay unbeaten as they defeated the Pirates 41-20.

Jaylin Dixon started the scoring for the Bulldogs with a 2-yard run with 7:43 remaining in the first quarter. Michael Alan Cole’s kick gave the Dawgs a 7-0 lead. With 4:24 to go in the first quarter, Jaden Lewis hauled in a Braiden Broussard pass for a 46-yard TD. Cole’s PAT extended the Bulldog lead to 14-0.

The Pirates wasted little time getting on the board after Lewis’ catch. Dalon Hill hit Kane Williams for a 65-yard TD pass. The Pirates’ 2-point conversion pass attempt was incomplete and left the Bulldogs with a 14-6 lead.

The Bulldogs answered a little over a minute later when Dixon got his second TD of the night with an 11-yard run. The PAT was good and the Dawgs extended their lead to 21-6.

In the second quarter, Jaland Lewis Horton got in the end zone with a 7-yard run. Cole’s PAT was good and the Dawgs took a 28-6 lead with 11:06 to go in the first half. Dixon got his notched his third TD run of the night, this one from 5-yards out, with 7:54 remaining in the half. Walker Thompson added the PAT to five the Dawgs a 35-6 lead that would hold until halftime.

Sweet Water tacked on their final score of the night with 8:49 remaining in the third quarter. Thompson hit Lashon Young for a 46-yard scoring pass. The PAT failed and left the Bulldogs with a 41-6 lead.

Fruitdale added a TD at the 5:27 mark of the third quarter when Hill connected with Kyser Talbert for a 22-yard score. A 2-point conversion failed, leaving the Pirates trailing 41-12. The Pirates added a late TD pass with 1:41 remaining in the game when Tony Johnston took a Hill pass to the end zone for a 98-yard score. Hill was successful on a 2-point conversion run, giving the final score of 41-20, in favor of the Bulldogs.

The Dawgs tallied 378 yards of total offense. Broussard connected on two of his passes for 71 yards and one TD. Thompson went 1-2 for the 46-yard touchdown. Leading the ground game, Horton had 110 yards on 10 carries with one TD, while Dixon had 3 TD carries totalling 18 yards. Xavier Lucy had 6 carries for 24 yards, Conner Edmonds had 2 carries for 16 yards, Devontae Blanks had 6 carries for 15 yards, William Etheridge had one carry for 12 yards, Thompson had 4 carries for 6 yards, Trent Smith had 1 carry for 3 yards and Deshanard Blanks added two carries for 1 yard. Lewis and Young had one catch each, both went for 46 yards and TDs. Sasha Smith added a single catch for 25 yards.

Sweet Water (8-0, 6-0 region) will travel to Pike County Friday night for its final regular season game of 2019. The win locked the Bulldogs in for first place in Class 1A Region 1. The Dawgs are set to host Georgiana (5-5, 4-3) in the first round of the playoffs.
