Bulldogs run over Wildcats for Class 1A Region 2 crown, 49-21

The Sweet Water Bulldogs traveled to Millry to take on the Wildcats for the region crown and left with that crown and an undefeated region record. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 20-0 lead then got some resistance from the Wildcats, when they clawed back to within 13 at 34-21. However, the Dawgs put 15 on the board in the fourth, to take the 49-21 win.

The Bulldogs received the opening kick and set up at their own 44. At the 7:40 mark, Jaland Lewis Horton scored on a 1-yard run. Michael Alan Cole’s PAT gave the Dawgs a 7-0 lead.

Following a Wildcat punt on their ensuing possession, the Bulldogs’ second drive ended with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Walker Thompson to Lashon Young. Cole’s PAT put the Dawgs up 14-0 with 2:45 to go in the first quarter.

Jaylin Dixon got the Dawgs on the board in the second quarter on a 55-yard run, on the play following a Wildcat punt. The PAT was unsuccessful, but the Bulldogs had a 20-0 lead with 7:55 to go in the first half.

The Wildcats’ Devonte Causey scored on a 1-yard run with 2:10 remaining in the half and the PAT by Zach Jenkins was good. The Bulldog led narrowed to 20-7.

But the Dawgs weren’t done for the first half. Following a Young kickoff return to the Wildcat 48 and three runs covering 38 yards, Dixon collected his second touchdown run of the night. The 10-yarder and a 2-point conversion run by Christian Dunning gave the Bulldogs a 28-7 lead at the half.

The Wildcats cashed in on their opening possession of the second half when Owen Hendry connected with Causey for a 58-yard touchdown pass. The PAT closed the Bulldog lead to 28-14 with 11:40 to go in the third quarter.

The Dawgs finally got back on the board with a 16-yard run from Dixon at the 3:38 mark of the third. The PAT was blocked, but the Dawgs’ lead increased to 34-14.

Millry’s Causey answered with a 47-yard touchdown run with 1:45 to go in the third quarter. Jenkins’ PAT brought the Wildcats within 13 at 34-21.

Dixon notched his fourth touchdown run of the night at the 11:53 mark of the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run. Thompson found Trace Luker for the successful 2-point conversion, giving the Dawgs a 42-21 lead.

The final score of the night came on a 7-yard Dunning run with 8:25 to go in the game. Thompson kicked the PAT and the Bulldogs set the final score of 49-21.

Dixon scored four touchdowns and gained 188 yards on 13 carries. Horton had one touchdown and 114 yards on 15 carries. Dunning had seven carries for 46 yards and added a touchdown. Thompson had six carries for 32 yards. Jonathan Morris had two carries for 14 yards and Delvontae Lucy had two carries for 10 yard. Thompson connected on one of six passes for the 32-yard touchdown for Young.

The win sealed the Class 1A Region 2 Championship for the Bulldogs. The Dawgs are scheduled to travel to Butler to take on Choctaw County next week.
