Bulldogs get 14 in fourth quarter to beat Tigers

The Sweet Water Bulldogs hosted the Thomasville Tigers in a seesaw battle on Friday night in Sweet Water. The Bulldogs and Tigers would swap scores in the first half, then the Tigers would take a nine point lead in the third. However, Braiden Broussard would throw two touchdown passes in the waning minutes of the game to help the Bulldogs pull of the 33-28 win.

The Bulldogs would strike first with 4:23 to go in the first quarter. Braiden Broussard punched it in from four yards out and Michael Alan Cole added the PAT to give the Dawgs a 7-0 lead. The visiting Tigers would strike back on a 40-yard pass from Averian Malone to Javien Johnson with 2:48 to go in the first quarter. The PAT by Jacob Hunter tied the game at 7-7.

Jaland Lewis Horton would get the Bulldogs back on top with a 29-yard run with 5:20 to go in the second quarter. An unsuccessful PAT would give the Dawgs a 13-7 lead. The Tigers evened up the score on a 13-yard run by Darian Grissom with 3:33 to go in the half. Horner’s PAT would put the Tigers up 14-13.

The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead with one second to go in the half on a 9-yard pass from Broussard to Antonio Sullivan. A 2-point attempt failed and the Bulldogs took a 19-14 lead into halftime.

With 8:39 to go in the third quarter, Thomasville’s Carter Hankins connected with Malone for a 30-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good and the Tigers took a 21-19 lead over the Bulldogs. The Tigers would extend their lead with 5:44 to go in the third when the Malone-Johnson tandem connected again on a 34-yard pass. The PAT gave the Tigers a 28-19 lead.

It took the Dawgs until the 3:05 mark to go in the game to get back on the board, when Broussard connected with Jaden Lewis on a 9-yard scoring pass. Cole’s PAT brought the Bulldogs within two points at 28-26. The game winner came with only 20 seconds to go in the game. Broussard found Sullivan again, this time for a 13-yard score. Cole’s kick gave the Dawgs their final margin of victory at 33-28.

Broussard went 6-12 for 105 yards and three touchdowns on the night. Sasha Smith caught two passes for 62 yards. Sullivan’s two catches covered 22 yard and both were touchdowns. Lewis Horton had 16 carries for 86 yards and one touchdown while Broussard added 66 yards on 11 carries with one touchdown. Xavier Lucy added 39 yards on 10 carries and Jaylin Dixon had eight carries for 35 yards.

The Bulldogs will host St. Luke’s Episcopal next week.
