BOE continues prep for new year

In a called meeting Thursday, the Demopolis Board of Education approved more actions in preparation for the beginning of the school year on August 8.

Top on the list was the personnel report that included two conditional employments for Shelby Gillroy as a Special Education teacher at Westside Elementary and Chandler Warren to be PE teacher, also at WES.

In addition, Warren was named assistant varsity basketball and football coach for a total supplemental pay of $5,109.

Jeffery Bonner and James Marlon Long were approved as substitutes, and Charles Wingfield was removed from the sub roster at his request.

The board approved Sandra Harris, the retired lunchroom manager at Demopolis High, to train the new manager for two weeks at $15 per hour. Regina Hill was approved as a long-term sub for Career Prep at Demopolis Middle School.

The board granted annual contracts for services for special needs students for psychometry, physical therapy and speech therapy. The contract for occupational therapy comes due in January.

Also approved at the short meeting were the 2019-2020 Code of Conduct and the bid for paper from Newell Paper Company.

At the close of the meeting, a public hearing was held of a policy on the supervision of low risk juvenile sex offenders. The policy pertains only to those designated by a juvenile court judge as having a low risk of re-offense.

The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be August 19.
