Atkins dominant as Tigers win 11th straight

PLANTERSVILLE, Ala. – Demopolis ran its win streak to 11 games and took firm control of the Class 5A, Area 7 standings Tuesday with a 13-0 road win over Dallas County.

Demopolis scored in every inning to back up the best outing of freshman Hayes Atkins’s young career. Atkins tossed a complete game shutout that included nine strikeouts while holding Hornet batters to just two hits on the day.

DeDe Davis singled to open the game and later scored on a Davis Petrey single to put the Tigers up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Demopolis put distance between themselves and Dallas County in the second with a five-run inning. The lone hit of the frame was a three-run double from Charles Casper that pushed the lead to 6-0.

Henry Overmyer drove in Hudson Holley with the first of his two RBI singles in the third inning for the 7-0 Tiger lead. Holley, Overmyer and Tyler Jones each had an RBI single in the fourth.

Maxwell George singled to open the fifth ahead of a Jake Malone double. Two batters later, Parker Hallmark hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate George for the final run of the game.

Casper and Overmyer each finished with two hits for the Tigers. Allgood and Holley scored three runs apiece while Davis and Patterson each scored two. Casper led the way with three RBIs.

Atkins (2-0) lowered his ERA to 1.26 on the year and now has 32 strikeouts in less than 17 innings of work. Demopolis (11-4) is set to travel to Central-Tuscaloosa Friday for the penultimate game on its Area 7 schedule.
