Archaeologists set summer meeting in Demopolis; invite public to bring artifacts

Archaeologists from throughout Alabama will speak at the Alabama Archaeological Society annual summer meeting in Demopolis Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 14-15.

All sessions, free and open to the public, will be held at the Demopolis Higher Education Center, 186 Field of Dreams Drive. Saturday events will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, from 1-3 p.m.

On Saturday morning, archaeologists will present informational talks on such topics as what to do when finding an artifact, resources for landowners, myths and truths about archaeology and a review of local archaeological projects.

Both afternoons the public is invited to bring artifacts for identification by AAS members. The AAS does not give appraisals, but anyone who brings an artifact will leave with a better idea of its age, purpose, place of manufacture and the artifact’s historical value.

The AAS was founded in 1954 by amateurs and professionals with a common mission, summarized in the society’s motto: “Discover, Study, Record.” Members meet annually in the summer and winter. Membership benefits include a bimonthly newsletter and a subscription to the Journal of Alabama Archaeology.
