Allen, Collins in runoff for mayor

Dr. Aliquippa Allen and Woody Collins will face each other in a runoff election Oct. 6 to become mayor of Demopolis.

The two led the four-person race for mayor in the election Tuesday, but neither won a majority. Incumbent Mayor John Laney finished third in the race.

A runoff election also will be held for the District 3 representative between T’Keisha Chandler and David McCants.

Preliminary returns of the mayoral and city council races are as follows:

For mayor: Allen, 901; Collins, 878; John Laney, 239; Andy Renner, 200.

For District 3: Chandler, 132; James Keeley, 39; McCants, 130.

For District 4: incumbent Bill Meador, 285; Louie Padilla, 231.

For District 5: incumbent Cleveland Cole Jr., 232; Jim Stanford, 336.

A total of 126 absentee ballots were cast, about 25 percent more than the last municipal election, according to Sam Gross, City Clerk.
