After a 6-4 loss to Class AA Pickens Academy Monday, Marengo rallied for a 16-0 area victory over Jackson Wednesday.
In the first inning, Riley Newton started off the hits with a stroke to center field for a single. Macey Petrey followed with a RBI double to plate Newton. Brittan Davis reached on an error and scored Petrey for the 2-0 lead.
After a second inning that saw 13 batters, the Longhorns led 10-0. Morgan Broadhead led off the second with a single followed by singles from Jessie Flowers and Hannah Freeman to load the bases. Mary Grace Sheffield followed with yet another single to get the RBI. Petrey doubled to score two more runs. Trinity Wilkinson, Brittan Davis, and Carly Vickers each notched singles with Wilkinson getting a RBI.
Early in the third, Newton hit a single followed by a walk from Petrey. Wilkinson hit a single, plating Newton. Petrey took home on a passed ball. On a fielder’s choice, Vickers plated Wilkinson to set up a 13-0 lead after three innings of play. In the fourth inning, Hannah Freeman led off with a walk followed by a single by Mary Grace Sheffield that scored Freeman. Riley Newton notched a RBI with a double to left field. Brittan Davis singled for the final RBI, plating Newton. Trinity Wilkinson, a seventh grader, pitched a no-hitter against the Eagles.
Marengo followed with a 10-4 victory over Southern Academy Thursday. Marengo took a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Sheffield opened with a leadoff single before Newton and Petrey each doubled. Petrey’s double scored Newton and Sheffield for the 2-0 lead. In the second inning, Vickers, Flowers and Newton each singled. Newton singled in Vickers before Petrey doubled home Newton to put MA up 5-0.
Vickers opened the fourth with a single before Flowers and Sheffield followed suit. Flowers’s single plated Vickers to move the lead to 6-1. Petrey then stroked a two-run homer for the 8-1 advantage.
Flowers singled in the sixth before Newton reach on an error. Petrey’s RBI fielder’s choice plated Flowers. Morgan Broadhead and Davis each singled in the sixth.
Marengo Academy (10-6) is competing in a tournament at Glenwood Academy in Phenix City this weekend.
