Demopolis unable to overcome early deficit in loss to ACA

Demopolis (18-4) dug itself too big of a hole on the road Thursday, taking a 7-5 loss to American Christian Academy.

Courtney Smith singled to lead off the game. Three batters later, Natalie Tatum singled her in for the 1-0 Demopolis lead. ACA wasted little time taking over as two hit-by-pitches set up a three-run homer by Haley Thorpe to put the Lady Patriots up 3-1. ACA added to the lead with a two-run second to push the lead to 5-1. Two more runs in the bottom of the fourth stretched the Demopolis deficit to 7-1.

The Tigers got back in it in the top of the fifth inning as Napoleon Roberson hit a leadoff double. Two batters later, Courtney Smith singled. Elly Brown followed with a double to score Roberson and cut it to 7-2. Two batters later, Tatum singled home Smith to make it 7-3.

Smith singled again to lead off the top of the seventh. Brown followed with a single of her own before Abbey Latham’s RBI grounder plated Smith to cut it to 7-4. Tatum then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Brown, cutting it to 7-5. The Tigers would later get the tying run to the plate but were unable to cash in.

Demopolis travels to Gulf Shores Monday for a spring break tournament.
