Coaching a team to a 25-3 season is almost always Coach of the Year worthy. But when coaching that team is your second job and that particular sport is actually your second sport, then it is something really special.

Marengo Academy girls basketball coach Danny Stenz is not a coach by trade. He has a completely unrelated profession that eats up 40 hours of his week. And basketball is not his first sport. He is really more of a softball guy. Two straight varsity state championships and a handful of junior high state titles on the diamond is enough to solidify that fact.

But Stenz has made a habit of winning more than 20 games a year on the hardwood. And this year he took his team all the way to the state championship game, a feat he accomplished despite the fact that his only senior rotation player suffered a very significant knee injury down the stretch.

Say what you want about private school ball versus public school ball. But winning is winning and Danny Stenz is nothing short of a winner, regardless of the sport. He is also the West Alabama Watchman 2012-2013 Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.
