Washington County blanks Sweet Water

SWEET WATER — Washington County (4-0, 3-0) controlled used a stifling defense and the electric running ability of DeAnthony Holcombe to key a 39-0 win over Sweet Water (2-2, 2-1) Thursday night. The Class 2A, Region 1 victory was all but settled by half as WCHS led 32-0.

“We were not very good tonight,” Sweet Water coach Pat Thompson said. “I didn’t have us prepared. The blame comes on me alone. We’re going to come to work Monday and the aim is to get better.”

Holcombe scored from 15 yards out on the opening drive of the game. After an interception by Kevin Howard punctuated Sweet Water’s promising opening march, Holcombe needed one snap to go 66 yards and stretch the lead to 12-0.

With 29.9 seconds left in the first quarter, Bailey Brown popped out from under center and hit Quinton Smith on a seam route that ended up as a 55-yard touchdown pass and a 19-0 WCHS lead.

Washington County added a 30-yard touchdown pass to Austin Kinsey and a 9-yard scoring run from Bailey to set the lead at 32-0 by halftime.

Holcombe added the final score of the night with a 31-yard touchdown run.

Keldric Greene led Sweet Water with 70 yards on 14 carries. Kyle Patterson led all tacklers with 13 total stops. Deshon Kilpatrick added 10 tackles.

Holcombe finished the night with 209 yards on 18 carries.
