Sweet Water sweeps Washington County to stay unbeaten in area play

Sweet Water (18-7) swept a trio of games against rival Washington County this week to maintain control of Class 2A, Area 2.

Sweet Water 7, Washington County 2

The Bulldogs opened the series with a 7-2 win at Chatom Tuesday evening. Sweet Water scored three runs in the third inning and four in the sixth to cruise to the win. Jonah Smith went 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot for the Bulldogs with a double and one RBI. R.J. Rodgers scored a pair of runs while serving as Smith’s courtesy runner.

Cole Morgan and Will Huckabee each drove in a run.

Wynn Thompson went 1-for-2 with one RBI. Hunter Mendenhall finished 1-for-2 with a run scored. Branson Davis was 2-for-4 with a double, one run scored and one RBI.

Braden Broussard went 1-for-4 with a double. Shamar Lewis was 1-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base. Luke Davis went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

The Bulldogs doubled in five of their nine base hits and provided more than enough run support for Smith, who picked up the win in a complete game effort. Smith struck out 10 over seven innings of work while relinquishing three hits and two unearned runs.

Sweet Water 1, Washington County 0

The Bulldogs notched a walk-off 1-0 win in the first game of a double-header at Sweet Water Wednesday. Chance Broussard made himself a winner when he stroked a two-out single through the six hole of the Washington County defense to plate Harris Etheridge for the victory.

Broussard struck out four batters over seven innings of work while holding Washington County to two hits. The Bulldogs recorded six hits in the game, including singles from Smith, Morgan, Thompson, Mendenhall and Branson Davis.

Sweet Water 11, Washington County 1

The final game of the series saw the Bulldogs score in every frame except the second en route to an 11-1, six-inning win.

Etheridge struck out one batter over six innings of work while giving up one unearned run for the complete game victory. His efforts on the mound drew support from a Sweet Water offense that notched 12 hits, including five of the extra base variety.

Smith went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Davis was 1-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Huckabee finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Thompson went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs.

Morgan went 1-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI. Chase Joiner scored a run while Luke Davis finished 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Shamar Lewis went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and one RBI.

Huckabee, Lewis and Branson Davis each stole a base in the game.

The Bulldogs are set to play again Thursday at Southern Choctaw before returning home for a Friday double-header that concludes area play.
