Sweet Water sweeps Saturday double-header

Sweet Water (3-0) showed itself well in a pair of games against larger classification schools Saturday. The Bulldogs opened the day with a 6-5 win over Class 4A Hale County before downing Class 5A Demopolis 11-0.

The Bulldogs found themselves down 5-4 in the top of the seventh when Shamar Lewis doubled in R.J. Rodgers to tie it. Jonah Smith later hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate Lewis for the go-ahead run.

Smith, who became the pitcher of record in the bottom of the sixth, slammed the door in the seventh by striking out the side for the win.

Sasha Smith went 1-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Jonah Smith drove in a run. Will Huckabee went 3-for-4 with a run scored, one RBI, a triple and a stolen base. Hunter Mendenhall was 1-for-4 with one RBI. Braden Broussard finished 1-for-3 with a stolen base. Luke Davis was 1-for-3 with a run scored. John Thomas Etheridge stole two bases and scored a run. Rodgers scored once.

Lewis was 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

Sweet Water made a winner out of Jonah Smith again in the nightcap, scoring one run in the first, two in the second, three in the third, three in the fourth and two in the sixth for the 11-0 victory over Demopolis. The Bulldogs strung together 10 hits and took advantage of four errors in the contest.

Jonah Smith struck out one over four innings of hitless work for the victory. Chase Joiner struck out one over two innings to close it.

Sasha Smith went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Jonah Smith was 1-for-1 with a double and two runs scored. Huckabee finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, three runs scored, a double and a home run.

Mendenhall went 2-for-4 with a run scored, one RBI and a stolen base. Broussard put together a 2-for-4 line with a run scored, one RBI and a stolen base. Etheridge went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. Rodgers drove in a run, scored a run and stole three bases. Lewis finished 1-for-3 with a homer, a run scored and one RBI.

Sweet Water is scheduled to travel to Clarke County for a double-header Tuesday night.
