Panther teams fall to A.L. Johnson

DIXON’S MILLS — The Marengo High basketball teams wrapped area play Tuesday with a pair of varsity losses to A.L. Johnson High School.

The junior varsity Panthers opened the night with a 54-38 win that saw Christion Wright score 17 points, grab 15 rebounds, dish out two assists and block three shots. Roosevelt Thompson added 15 points to go along with two rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block.

Johnny Robertson led ALJ with 14 points while DeAunde Bridges scored 10. The win set the MHS JV at 5-9 on the season.

The Lady Panthers followed with a 47-37 loss to A.L. Johnson. Alton James had 12 points, seven rebounds, an assists and a steal. J’Mya Hall added 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, four steals and a block.

Tiffany Barber and LaRobyn Harris each scored nine points for ALJ.

The loss ended the MHS area slate at 0-4 with an overall record of 4-10.

The varsity boys wrapped the night with a narrow 71-69 defeat to the A.L. Johnson varsity. Cordarius Pritchett had 19 points, nine rebounds, six assists, five steals and a block to lead Marengo. Justin Dunning added 17 points, three rebounds, one assist and two steals. DeAngelos Crispin finished with 10 points, four rebounds and a steal.

Shermon Kennedy led ALJ with 16 points while Desmond Mair had 14 points.

The loss left the MHS varsity at 3-11 overall and 1-3 in area play.

The ALJ contests followed a Friday tilt with area rival Linden that also saw the Panthers drop all three contests.

The junior varsity Panthers opened the night with a 44-40 loss to the Linden B-Team. Quindarius Ausbon led MHS with 13 points, three rebounds and three steals. Christopher Robinson paced Linden with 10 points.

The Marengo ladies followed with a 57-43 loss to Linden. Hall had 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals. James added 13 points, six rebounds, one assist and two steals.

I’Miya Agee led Linden with 16 points while ToMysha Boykin added 15 for the Lady Patriots.

The varsity squads capped the night with Marengo falling to Linden 64-57. Michael Kennedy had 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals to lead Marengo. Dequan Charleston was the high scorer for Linden with 19 points.

The Panthers are set to play again Thursday night when they travel to Dallas County.

The Marengo varsity teams will each enter the Class 1A, Area 4 tournament next week as the No. 3 seed.
