Old Town Home residents made ‘Queens for a Day’

Residents and on duty staff of Old Town Home Assisted Living Facility in Linden were made queens for a day on Saturday, July 26.

Members of the Friendship in Christ Sunday School Class of First Baptist Demopolis enjoyed pampering each resident and staff as “A Queen for a Day”.

Linda Massey entertained the ladies as she played her psaltery for them. Favorite hymns presented were “Just a Closer Walk”, “Jesus Loves Me”, “Come Thou Fount” and “Take It to the Lord in Prayer”. Another favorite selection was Elvis’ ever popular “Love Me Tender”. The beautiful melodies filled the room and were enjoyed by all.

Immediately following the musical presentation the Friendship in Christ Class was introduced and shared their desire to serve God by serving these precious ladies. After a prayer the ladies were escorted into the dining room which had been elegantly decorated with chairs covered in regal cloths and tied with ribbons, each featuring the initial of the resident.

The table was covered with a white brocade tablecloth and jewel toned placemats. Personalized place cards lay on each plate and a single, white candelabra with crystals and white tapers centered the table. The dessert table held a beautiful silver vase with fresh flowers on a silver runner over a white cloth.

As they were seated, each lady was adorned in royalty with gemstones and a golden crown trimmed in white pearls. The eldest resident of the Old Town Home, Ms. Nettie Short, was crowned the Royal Queen for the evening. Ms. Short, who is 86 years old, was presented a necklace with a silver Royal crown embedded with a large pearl. Queen Short presented her five sister queens of the Old Town Home with a gold and pearl brooch.

The royal feast consisted of fresh fruit, chicken and wild rice casserole, assorted vegetables and desserts fit for a queen. Instrumental selections from the 30’s played softly in the background as the residents enjoyed their dinner.

At the conclusion of their royal evening each queen was presented a gift bag of assorted goodies and items for enjoyment. The class also prepared gift bags for each staff member of Old Town Home for their diligent and loving care.
Reflecting on the evening with tears in her eyes, one of the dear ladies said, “It made me feel so special!”

Residents enjoying their “Queen for a Day” event were Mary Lou Mackey, Mary Westbrook, Real Nichols, Nettie Short and Alma Osburn. They were joined by staff member Betty Rembert.
