Mississippi Symphony Orchestra to perform at UWA

LIVINGSTON — On Tuesday, April 2, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Crafton Beck, will perform at the University of West Alabama’s Bibb Graves Auditorium. The concert of orchestral favorites and light classics will begin at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $10 for adults and $2 for students. Sumter County Fine Arts Council members and UWA students with current student ID are admitted free.

The first half of the concert will consist of light classics, starting with the exhilarating Overture to Ruslan & Ludmilla by Mikhail Glinka and including other well known selections like Thunder and Lightning Polka by Johann Strauss, Jr., and Clair de Lune by Debussy.

Following intermission, the Orchestra will return with a selection of music from popular culture, including themes from Superman and James Bond, selections from The King & I, and a medley of Burt Bacharach songs.

As the largest professional performing arts organization in the state, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra performs to more than 75,000 Mississippians each year at more than 120 concerts statewide.

The MSO tours statewide as a full orchestra, a chamber orchestra, and as one of three resident ensembles—the Woodwind Quintet, the Brass Quintet, and the String Quartet. Additionally the MSO supports three youth orchestras and an education program through which more than 500school children receive daily instruction in violin, viola and cello.

In addition to the evening concert on April 2, the MSO will conduct educational visits to selected Sumter County schools.
