The Marengo Maverick, a 12-and-under youth softball team based in Demopolis, continued its fall season play this past Saturday in a four-team friendly at the Hillcrest Softball Complex.

The Maverick were bumped from the tournament in the first round of elimination play by eventual champions, the Tuscaloosa-based Titans.

“Defensively, I felt like we came to play,” one of the team’s coaches, Jason Cannon said. “That was an issue for us in our previous tournament, but our girls really took a big step in the right direction. Our bats didn’t quite step up with our defense, but we’re making more and better contact. That’s the first step in finding the gaps. We did put the ball in play a lot and let them make some errors. And we drew eight walks, so we’re making good decisions in the batter’s box.”

Offensively, Caroline Larkin and Madison Ford each went 1-for-2 from the plate.

In the circle, Lizzie Cannon led the pitching corps with six innings and three strikeouts. Haylee Rowley tossed four innings and logged four strikeouts. Tayler Pipkins also got one inning of work.

The Maverick will continue fall play Nov. 7 in Clanton.
