Lady Longhorns take two in tournament, win regional shootout

The Marengo Academy Lady Longhorns took two of three in a tournament at Morgan last week before picking up a region victory over region foe Russell Christian Tuesday.

Patrician Academy 7, Marengo Academy 5

The Lady Longhorns opened play in the Morgan tournament last Friday with a 7-5 loss to Patrician. Payton Stokes led the Lady Longhorns at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and a triple. Morgan Broadhead followed at 2 for 2. Ryan Hale and Macey Petrey were each 1-for-3. Petrey doubled in two runs. Hale and Stokes each contributed one RBI. Petrey, Broadhead, Jessie Flowers and Mary Grace Sheffield each scored a run.

Edgewood 11, Marengo Academy 5

The Lady Longhorns followed with an 11-5 loss to Edgewood Academy. Mary Grace Sheffield, Payton Stokes and Brittan Davis each picked up hits in the game while Petrey, Drake and Davis drove in runs. The Lady Longhorn runs came from Sheffield, Ryan Hale, Petrey and Stokes.

Macon East 13, Marengo Academy 5

In the third Lady Longhorn game of the weekend, Macon East scored 10 runs in the first inning en route to a 13-5 victory. Over the next three innings, the MA defense and pitching by Brittan Davis and Jessie Flowers held the Knights to only three runs. Mary Grace Sheffield was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Ryan Hale was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Macey Petrey was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Payton Stokes was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Morgan Broadhead finished 1-for-2 with one run scored. Charlie Vickers also scored a run.

Marengo Academy 11, Morgan 7

On Saturday, the Lady Longhorns found a spark, beating Morgan Academy 11-7. Hot bats, stolen bases and nearly flawless defense sealed the win. Sheffield went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs and one run scored. Ryan Hale finished 1-for-3 with one RBI, two stolen bases and two runs scored.

Petrey was 2-for-3 with one RBI, three stolen bases and two runs scored. Stokes went 1-for-2 with one RBI, two stolen bases and one run scored. Hannah Freeman finished 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run scored. Mary Jordan Drake was 1-for-2 with a double and three RBIs. Brittan Davis had a stolen base and two runs scored. Morgan Broadhead had a stolen base and Charlie Vickers scored a run.

Marengo Academy 14, Escambia Academy 1

In the second game Saturday against Escambia, the Lady Longhorns won 14-1. Corie Hall took the circle for three innings followed by Brittan Davis. Hall allowed only one hit and had five strikeouts. Davis allowed no hits and had three strikeouts in one inning. Sheffield was 1-for-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Hale finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored, three RBIs and four stolen bases.

Petrey went 1-for-2 with one run scored, one RBI and three stolen bases. Stokes was 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs, two runs scored and three stolen bases. Freeman scored one run and had one stolen base and one RBI. Drake had one run scored, one stolen base and two RBIs. Davis was 3-for-3 with one run scored, one RBI, and two stolen bases. Broadhead was 1-for-3 with a double, one run scored and two RBIs. Honeycutt finished 1-for-1 with one run scored.

Marengo Academy 19, Russell Christian 11

In Tuesday’s region game against Russell Christian, the Lady Longhorns downed Russell Christian 19-11.

Sheffield went 1-for-4 with a double, two stolen bases and one run scored. Hale finished 3-for-5 with three stolen bases and three runs scored. Petrey was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run while scoring three runs, and recording two stolen bases and four RBIs. Stokes finished 3-for-5 with a grand slam, three runs scored, one stolen base and five RBIs. Freeman was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Drake finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored, one stolen base and three RBIs.

Davis went 1-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored, three stolen bases and three RBIs. Broadhead finished 1-for-4 with one run scored, one stolen base and two RBIs. Flowers had a stolen base and sacrifice RBI.

The Lady Longhorns will meet South Choctaw Academy in region play Monday after a rainout Thursday.
