Tuscaloosa AL. – November 28, 2018 – Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama will host the West Alabama One Smart Cookie Celebration on Tuesday, December 18 at the Tuscaloosa River Market. This event will raise money for the organization, recognize outstanding Women of Distinction in West Alabama, and showcase the impact local Girl Scouts have on their community.

The Women of Distinction Awards pays tribute to women who have made special contributions to their community through civic, academic or professional involvement and are exemplary role models for today’s girls.

“We invite the community to join us and be inspired by this celebration of impactful women in West Alabama,” said Karen Peterlin, chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama. “You’ll also meet local Girl Scouts and learn how they are actively making the world a better place.”

The Honorable Tammy Jackson Montgomery, Sumter County District Court Judge and creator of Children of the Village Network, Inc. will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Karen LaMoreaux Bryan was a distinguished lawyer and an active community leader in the West Alabama area. She was a lifetime member of Girl Scouts and served on the Tombigbee Girl Scouts Council. The Karen LaMoreaux Bryan Lifetime Achievement Award is given to a West Alabama woman who embodies qualities as outline in the Girl Scout Law.

Honorable Montgomery was the first African-American woman in Alabama history to be elected the first time she ran for District Court Judge. She ran for office in 1996 and is currently serving her consecutive third term. Honorable Montgomery created the nonprofit Children of the Village Network, Inc., a charity designed to combat illiteracy, hunger, and crime, and provides scholarships for college students.

“We are extremely pleased to honor Judge Montgomery with the Karen LaMoreaux Bryan Lifetime Achievement Award,” Peterlin said. “Judge Montgomery’s work truly epitomizes all the core values of Girl Scouts that are reflected in the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Judge Montgomery is a positive role model for all our girls and young women.”

Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc. will be recognized as a Corporate Champion. For more than 20 years, Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MGUSI) has supported GSNCA through it’s financial donations and Team Member volunteerism.

“MBUSI has been proud to give back to give back to Girl Scouts right here in West Alabama,” Mercedes-Benz spokeswoman Felycia Jerald said. “Girl Scouts are taking action to make their communities a better place and will grow into the women leaders of tomorrow.”

Proceeds from the West Alabama One Smart Cookie Celebration help to provide low income and underserved girls in local communities the same access to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience as girls in traditional troops.

Tickets are $25 for Girl Scout members, $30 for non-members, and $10 for Girl Scouts under 18. A reserved table for 8 can be purchased for $250. Tickets can be purchased at girlscoutsnca.org/smartcookie or by calling 205-453-9524.

About Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama

We’re over 13,000 strong—9,500 girls and 3,800 adults in 36 counties in the state of Alabama who believe girls can change the world. It began over 100 years ago with one woman, Girl Scouts’ founder Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low, who believed in the power of every girl. She organized the first Girl Scout troop on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, and every year since, we’ve made her vision a reality, helping girls discover their strengths, passions, and talents.

Today we continue the Girl Scout mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Girl Scouts is the preeminent leadership development organization for girls. Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama is a United Way partner.
