UPDATED: Former DPD assistant chief Meigs passes away

Former Demopolis Police Department assistant chief Robert “Bobby” Meigs of the Demopolis Police Department passed Thursday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

miegsMeigs started with DPD in March 1975 and worked for the department for 25 years, retiring in March 2000. Demopolis Police Chief Tommie Reese said that Meigs was instrumental in his career at an early age in the Junior Police Program at DPD. Reese, along with many other former and current officers, joined the program under Meigs.

Reese said that Meigs’ service to this community went beyond than DPD. Meigs served with AmStar Ambulance Service for a number of years after retirement.

“He was a dedicated servant and will truly be missed,” Reese said. “We asking everyone to remember the family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Visitation will be Monday at 10 a.m. until 10:45 at Kirk Funeral Home Demopolis, with graveside services to follow at 11 a.m. at Demopolis Memorial Gardens.
