England wins state, regional engineering awards

Regional West ALRachel Michelle England, a senior at Demopolis High School, competed in the West Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair at the University of West Alabama in Livingston on March 7-8. England won first place in the Animal Science Category.

Her project title was “Searching for the Fountain of Youth Using the Compound Resveratrol to Examine Longevity in Drosophila melanogaster.”

Recently, she changed to the hardest category in the Alabama State Science & Engineering Fair at the University of Alabama at Huntsville.

On April 4, she was awarded the best of show special award from the Greater Huntsville Rotary Club and received $50.

On April 5 at the Grand Awards Session she won first place in the state for the category of medicine and health and was awarded $150. She also won the Grand Award from the U.S. Army for a total of $50.

England was also selected as an Intel International Science & Engineering Fair 2014 finalist to be held May 11-16 held in Los Angeles, Calif.
