Dunn wins Player of the Year, leads All-County baseball team
To oust the incumbent Player of the Year when he is on your own team and, by all accounts, having a better season than his award-winning campaign, is quite a feat. That’s exactly what Marengo Academy sophomore David Dunn did in 2015.
The Longhorns leaned heavily on Wallace State signee Kyle Friday and the senior delivered in a big, big way. Just a season after earning Player of the Year honors, Friday hit .527 with two homers, 34 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Add that to a 7-1-1 pitching campaign that featured 52 strikeouts and a 2.48 ERA and you’ve got Player of the Year material again. But, somehow, Dunn managed to hit his way to the award with an astounding .593 batting average to go along with four homers, 14 doubles and 49 RBIs. He also did plenty of work on the mount, compiling a 7-2 record in front of a 3.15 ERA and a county-high 61 strikeouts.
Dunn’s Player of the Year nod goes right along with Coach of the Year honors being bestowed upon his lineup maker, Steve King.
In his first season with the Longhorns, King helmed a 21-game win streak that ended abruptly in the semifinals against Marengo nemesis Edgewood Academy. Still, King and the Longhorns sat atop the ASWA polls for a number of weeks and finished with a 24-6-1 record. Not too shabby for your first year on the job.
