DPD warns against Reader’s Digest scam

The Demopolis Police Department is warning the public about a recent scam that has been occurring within the city and the county.

As part of the scheme, several individuals have received phone calls stating that they have won a Reader’s Digest contest and that their prize will be delivered to their residence once requirements are met.

Victims are told that, in order to receive their prize, they must go to CVS, get a Green Dot Money Pack Card and put some money on the card to cover incidental charges such as shipping and taxes.

“The only problem will be that you won’t get a prize and your money will be long gone,” Demopolis Police Department Chief Tommie Reese said of the scam. “I am asking our citizens to never give out personal information to anyone that you do not know or trust and to never send money looking to get a prize or winnings that you have not entered to win.”
