DPD issues scam warning

The Demopolis Police Department wants to warn the public about a recent scam circulating around the city.

Several individuals have received phone calls stating that they have won a Reader’s Digest Contest and other contests and the prize will be delivered to their residence once certain requirements are met.

The scam says in order to receive the prize a person has to go to CVS, get a Green Dot Money Pack Card and put money on the card to cover charges like shipping, taxes and the like.

Demopolis Chief of Police Tommie Reese said the problem with the scam is that the prize never arrives and the money spent is gone for good.

“I am asking our citizens to never give out personal information to anyone that you do not know or trust and to never send money looking to get a prize or winnings that you have not entered to win,” Reese said. “People are always looking for a get rich quick fix, but 99 percent of the time end up empty handed.”
