DHS alum James among OVC Players of the Week

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – One day after setting a FCS national rushing record, four Jacksonville State players were named Ohio Valley Conference co-Players of the Week, while freshman quarterback Eli Jenkins was also tabbed Newcomer of the Week by the league office on Sunday.

Troymaine Pope, Miles Jones, Eli Jenkins and DaMarcus James combined to rush for 539 yards and five touchdowns to set a FCS Record and tie a NCAA Division I football record after all four players rushed for 100 yards or more in the Gamecocks’ 48-13 win over Jacksonville University on Saturday.

Pope had 160 yards on 16 carries and three touchdowns and averaged 10.0 yards per carry; Jones had 138 yards on 20 carries, Jenkins had 128 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown; and James had 105 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown.

The quartet helped establish new Jacksonville State rushing records for most yards rushing in a game with 523 and most carries with 70.

In just his second game at quarterback, Jenkins had 15 carries for 128 rushing yards with one touchdown, while completing 2-of-6 for 12 yards as the signal-caller.

Jacksonville State returns to action this weekend against former Gulf South Conference and in-state rival North Alabama. The Gamecocks have won six of the last seven meetings between the two teams, including six straight from 1988-1992.
