Demopolis schools to honor Sandy Hook Wednesday

Demopolis City Schools will use Wednesday, Dec. 19 as a day of remembrance for the victims of Friday’s mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Demopolis City Schools Superintendent Dr. Al Griffin noted that the American flag on each campus will fly at half mast all week in observance of the tragedy as he outlined the proposal to the DCS Board of Education members at Monday’s meeting.

Students system wide will be encouraged to wear green and white Wednesday. Additionally, each campus will offer a brief period of prayer and reflection as students wishing to participate will be encouraged to gather around the flagpole of their respective campuses at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Other agenda items covered during Monday’s meeting included the approval of a field trip by the U.S. Jones Elementary School fifth grade honor club to Washington D.C. April 22, 2013.

The board approved various overnight trips for Demopolis’ spring sports teams as well as signing off on the usage of the DHS gym by Ross Martial Arts for its annual showcase and competition to be held in January.

The board voted to approve a 1 p.m. dismissal Jan. 7-9 for Demopolis High School students as they participate in semester exams.

The board’s next meeting will take place Jan. 14, 2013 at 5:15 p.m.
