Demopolis moves to 4-1 with win over Choctaw County

Demopolis used a balanced scoring effort and timely free throw shooting to down Choctaw County 75-64 Tuesday and move to 4-1 on the season.

“They struggled at times but when we got to fourth quarter, we outscored them 26-14. We put them away at the free throw line again,” Demopolis assistant coach Stephen Campbell said. “This team is learning how to play under pressure.”

The Tigers trailed 20-18 after the first quarter and opened up a 36-29 lead by half. After Choctaw closed the gap to 49-48 by the end of the third, Demopolis polished off the game at the free throw line.

“We knocked them down in the fourth quarter, which enables us to set up our defense and translates to loose balls, tip balls, steals,” Campbell said.

The Tigers hit 11 of 18 free throws in the game, including eight charity stripe points in the fourth quarter.

Charles Tripp led the way with 14 points and four rebounds. Demetrius Smith had 13 points. Xavier Jowers added 12 points, six rebounds and two assists. Josh Moore finished with 12 points while Anthony McIntosh had nine points and five assists.

Demopolis was set to face Greene County Saturday but that contest has been moved to Friday night with the junior varsity beginning at 5 p.m.
