Bulldogs win Class 2A, Region 1 title

MOBILE — Sweet Water (8-1, 7-0) took the Class 2A, Region 1 title with authority Friday night, downing Mobile Christian 42-7.

Defense was the highlight of the Bulldogs victory against Mobile Christian. Christian Washington (44) with help from Taylor Wilson (16) and Tanner Luker (58) halt the forward progress of a Leopard running back.

“You could tell they were very excited about what we did tonight, what we got accomplished. That’s just one of our goals. Now let’s move onto our next (goal), which is trying to get to Auburn,” Sweet Water head coach Stacy Luker said of region title and the Bulldogs’ hopes of punching their ticket to the Class 2A title game at Jordan-Hare Stadium in December.

Jakoby Aldridge opened the scoring with a 10-yard run with 8:40 to play in the first quarter. Brett Davis added to the lead with 2:15 to go in the frame when he returned a punt 75 yards for a score.

“We threw up three straight three-and-outs to open the game, which was good. I thought our defense really set the tone in the first half of that game,” Luker said.

After the Leopards got on the board with a 33-yard run, Sweet Water answered with a 14-play drive that milked nearly seven minutes off the game clock and culminated in a two-yard scoring plunge by Davis to put the Bulldogs up 21-7 at half.

Davis found the end zone for a third time with 6:22 to play in the third quarter when he scored from seven yards out.

Aldridge later added to the lead with a 21-yard scoring run that was set up by a 62-yard Deion Waters scamper.

Desmond Retic polished off the win with a four-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Sweet Water will close out the regular season on the road at T.R. Miller next Friday night.
