ALJ girls hold off Marengo High in area tournament

A.L. Johnson held off a game Marengo High team 69-61 Monday to punch its ticket to the finals of the Class 1A, Area 4 girls basketball tournament.

Tiffany Barber starred for the Lady Eagles, pouring in 30 points in the victory. Freshman Akayla McGhee proved invaluable as well as she contributed 18 points in the contest.

J’Mya Hall put together a masterful performance for Marengo, scoring 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds, six assists and six steals. Iesha Bouler added 14 points with eight rebounds and eight steals. Alton James had 11 points.

The season ends for Marengo while A.L. Johnson advances to Wednesday’s championship at Linden High School against the top-seeded Lady Patriots.

Both squads have already clinched a berth in the sub-regional round. Wednesday’s Area 4 title game is set for 6 p.m.
