More businesses, activities line up for Main Street kickoff Tuesday

Kickoff for Demopolis being named a Main Street Alabama Designated Community is adding a growing list of businesses signing up to take part in the event from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 28. Everyone in the city is invited to join in the fun.

In addition to businesses facing Public Square that will stay open for visitors and late shoppers, several restaurants in town will be setting up booths to sell their specialties. Aloha Grill will offer hibachi plates; A Slab and More has barbecue sandwiches. Easy Street Wings will be on hand, as will Lela Jones with her desserts, and Simply Delicious will offer chicken salad sandwiches and desserts.

The Bistro and The Mustard Seed, both located downtown, will offer food and beverages. Also open will be Dr. Britney Anderson, Nancy and Co. Fine Jewelers and Social Butterfly.

Children aren’t being left out. Games will be set up in the park, and kids can choose to get a face painting. For even more fun, the Marengo County Historical Society will sponsor an Architectural Scavenger Hunt.

Adding to the festivities will be music provided by Andi Turberville and Mike Rogers.

The kickoff event is being held in conjunction with the visit of officials from the Main Street program who will tour the area designated for revitalization and begin their support of Demopolis as it works to bring life to the heart of the community.

The community is invited to the Marengo County History & Archive Museum (McHAM) to meet the Main Street Alabama officials and then tour the participating businesses in the downtown area.

The aim of the Main Street project is the revitalization of the city’s central business district, said Rhae Darsey, executive director. The target area roughly is bordered by Capitol and Franklin streets and Cedar and Commissioners avenues. Also included are a spur of Commissioners Avenue extending to the City Landing and another, along West Washington Street to the Bargain Box.
