Black Belt environment forum set in Selma

Residents of the Black Belt are invited to a forum discussing environmental justice and community development Monday, Nov. 25, in Selma.

Hosted by U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, the forum is “an important conversation about the community development and environmental justice in the Black Belt.”

For decades residents of the Black Belt haven’t had the same access to opportunities and resources as their fellow Alabamians, said Jones. “We need to think big about how to solve these problems.”

The event will be held in the Hank Sanders Building at Wallace Community College, 3000 Earl Goodwin Pkwy. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., and the forum begins at noon.

The forum is being held in coordination with the League of Conservation Voters and The Nature Conservancy. Jones will be moderating a panel of local officials and environmental experts.

Forum panelists include: Tony Haygood, mayor of Tuskegee; Ben Eaton, District 5 Perry County Commissioner; Tammy Herrington, League of Conservation Voters/Conservation Alabama; Hillary Beard, Legislative Director for U.S. Rept. Terri Sewell, and Perman Hardy, Lowndes County activist.
