Woman reportedly leaves newborn in trash can

WSFA 12 News out of Montgomery is reporting that a 20-year-old will face attempted murder charges after leaving her newborn baby in a garbage can for approximately five hours.

The woman, who has not been identified by the Perry County Sheriff’s Office, is alleged to have given birth Thursday, Dec. 4 at her home on Sand Road in Newbern.

Investigators indicated the young woman’s mother and the stepfather took the 20-year-old to the hospital in Demopolis with the belief she had endured a miscarriage.

A medical examination at the hospital determined the woman did not have a miscarriage, but had actually given birth to the child. The examining physician noted the woman was eight months pregnant at the time of the birth.

Investigators report the father of the 20-year-old returned home and heard cries of a baby coming from a trash can at the back of the house. The baby was approximately five hours old at the time of discovery.

The baby was taken to Hale County Hospital and later flown to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham. The child is reportedly suffering from an infection stemming from the use of a razor blade to cut the umbilical cord.

The Perry County Sheriff’s Department indicated the woman will be arrested later this week after completion of her medical examinations, at which time she will be charged with attempted murder.
