UWA women’s soccer routs Oakwood

LIVINGSTON – Head Coach Graeme Orr could not have asked for a better start to the 2012 season as the University of West Alabama women’s soccer team rolled past Oakwood University, 13-0, Sunday at Tiger Stadium.

West Alabama came out strong from the start with four goals scored in the first six minutes. Oakwood failed to overcome the early deficit as the Tigers held on for the triumph.

Six different Tigers scored on the day with Nicki Gears, Nicola Gibson, Rianna Gurvitz, Natalie Perry and freshman midfielder Katy Morris each scoring twice in the shortened match.

UWA had 17 shots on goal in the first period alone, while Oakwood failed to have a shot the entire match. Leading the way for the Tigers was Morris, who made the most of her debut with two goals scored on seven shots.

The Tigers now travel to Marion, Ala., to face Judson College on Tuesday afternoon. Scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., the contest will be a rematch of last season’s inaugural match that UWA won, 2-1.
